Canterbury Shaker Village
Exciting Winter Events at Canterbury Shaker Village: Snowshoeing Race, March 6, 2021
Sugar Camp Guided Hiking Tours, March 20 & 27, 2021Join us for snowshoeing at the Village! In partnership with the New Hampshire Snowshoe Trail Race Series, Canterbury Shaker Village will be hosting a Bonus 2-4 mile snowshoe race Saturday, March 6 at 10 am. The race winds through the Village’s spectacular 700-acre grounds, with racers free to explore its open pastures, wooded trails, and take in views of Turning Mill Pond. After the race, enjoy hot cocoa & treats. In addition, prizes will be awarded.
Registration for the race is $20 and is open at www.shakers.org.
Participants may opt to run either one or two loops on race day. Please note that though this race is part of the New Hampshire Snowshoe Trail Race Series, it is a special bonus race, and will not count towards the series competition. The race is limited to 75 participants, and there will be no day-of registration. The race will follow strict Covid-19 guidelines to ensure the safety of all racers, staff, and volunteers.
The Village course is currently covered in cold, dry powder snow but in the event that the snow melts by race day, the race is still on. Snow or no, we go! It’s Maple Syrup Season! Next month, join Mark Stevens for a four-mile round trip guided hiking tour to the Shaker’s remote sugar camp. Tours are Saturday, March 20 and Saturday, March 27 from 1 – 3pm. Tickets are on sale at www.shaker.org at $50 per person, and to ensure social distancing, each tour is limited to 12 people. Masks are required and participants should dress for the weather and come prepared to hike four miles round-trip through the woods on trails that could be muddy or icy. Spring 2021 Chef’s Table Dinners will have the same menu but two dates and VERY limited indoor seating for each dinner date (limited to 42 people per dinner!). Chef’s Table Dinner Series are intimate dinner events that happen at Flag Hill! These dinners are 4-course dinners, with each course being paired with a wine/spirit/cocktail. Dinner reservations are $65 per person of which includes the 4-course dinner, wine/spirit/ or cocktail pairings with each course, tax and hospitality.

Virtual Homeschool Series: Observe, Discover, and Explore
For ages 4 to 10
Programs are the first and second Thursdays from November through April | 10:00 to 10:45 a.m.

Observe, discover, and explore phenomena in the natural world as a scientist does, through this monthly virtual series for homeschool students. The first Thursday of each month, a seasonal topic is introduced and students are given an outdoor investigation to complete at home. The investigations use materials readily available at home and are suitable for different age groups. On the second Thursday of each month, students share their observations and discoveries, and meet a live animal related to the topic.
Each program will be recorded and available to view for a limited time after each program. An adult must participate with each child or children at no extra cost. The virtual sessions will beheld via Zoom, with links provided upon registration. Advance registration and payment required.
Cost: $9/member child; $11/non-member child per month;
$18/member family; $22/non-member family per month

Concord and the Underground Railroad – Visit Concord NH (Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce)
The Underground Railroad ran through Concord. This network of secret routes and safe houses helped enslaved African-Americans to escape North and to Canada. The Railroad was run by abolitionists and others sympathetic to the cause against human slavery. There are not clear records, but more than 30,000 people were thought to have escaped. And some were hidden in the fine homes in and around Concord. Read more here.

The life and work of Abbott Thayer — Dublin resident, natural historian, and a leading American artist in his day — present an interdisciplinary case study on the role of nature as a “medium” in the fullest sense of the word. Thayer immersed himself in intense observation of Dublin’s woodlands and made revelations with far-reaching implications that landed on the desks of Churchill, Roosevelt, and others. This richly illustrated presentation by artist and art historian April Claggett will take a deep dive into the lessons that Thayer, known around the world as the “inventor of camouflage,” learned from the local landscape. There will be plenty to discuss!

Last month, Emily Goulet from Granite State Ambassadors took the time to sit with Peter Telge. As the founder and owner of the second NH brewery and first operating brewpub, one can imagine the experiences Peter has to share! If you missed the interview, we’re highlighting a few key points here!
1) St. Paddy’s day is right around the corner, we not only have Irish Dancers coming in during the evening, we will have the Spain Brothers performing throughout the course of the night!
2) We have been approved to expand our outdoor dining area up to 250 seats!! Get ready to enjoy the nice weather by the river with some awesome food and beers!!
3) We have our new food menu coming out here soon, Rob has really outdone himself this time to bring the people what they want!!!
4) We are bringing on a new distiller who will be revolutionizing our liquor products and producing some fun new items for you!!
5) Lastly, as we are expanding and coming to nice weather, we are looking to hire a few motivated and experienced people to add to our FOH staff. If you know anyone, please have them drop by to fill out an application and speak with Ben, M-F evenings!

Meet New Hampshire Makers – a Virtual Tasting Event, part of the 2021 NH Food System Statewide Gathering

The NH Food Alliance, a statewide network supported by the UNH Sustainability Institute and dedicated to growing a thriving, fair, and sustainable local food system in the Granite State, has partnered with several local and statewide organizations to host Meet New Hampshire Makers, a virtual tasting event part of the 2021 NH Food System Statewide Gathering, on Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 5:15pm to 6:30pm.
In support of local small businesses, food producers, and artisans from across New Hampshire, the virtual event will highlight short presentations from three featured makers: Wood Stove Kitchen, Winnipesaukee Woods Farm, and Wayfarer Coffee Roasters, followed by a Q&A session. From now until March 3, attendees will have the opportunity to select from a variety of Meet New Hampshire Makers tasting boxes created by the featured makers and available for purchase through the Belknap Foodshed. Meet New Hampshire Makers is a free event and registration is open to the public. Although purchasing a Meet New Hampshire Makers tasting box is not required to attend the virtual tasting event, attendees who choose to purchase one are encouraged to try products from their boxes during the event to spark learning and discussion about the featured makers, their products, and supporting locally-made New Hampshire goods.
