NH Living History Event

August 18-19, 2018

The Living History Event is a weekend of stepping back in time in convincingly historic locations. We are offering GSAs the opportunity to receive hours credit for volunteering at this event because of our partnership with the Greater Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, and you will sign up directly with their volunteer manager, who will report your hours back to us after the event.

Check out the photos from when we toured the event in 2014!

To sign up, contact Ellie Harbour at emharbour@gmail.com. Ellie will assign you a spot based on your interests, and can answer any questions you have about the event.

When you e-mail, let her know you are a GSA so you can be placed in a location where you can wear your GSA uniform without dressing up in period costume.

Event Hours

  • Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Event Location
In and around Hillsborough – Jones Rd., the Franklin Pierce Homestead, Historic Hillsborough Center, and Downtown.

Parking Info
There is free parking at all locations. The best parking is in the downtown area and the Pierce Homestead parking lot. Jones Road is field parking. Historic Hillsborough Center has limited parking – they may add field parking also, but haven’t worked out the details yet with a landowner. Volunteers are welcome to park and take the vans, but must have a wristband, which you will be able to get near all parking locations. All volunteers receive free entrance the day of their shift at all four sites.

GSA Duties
Shifts are typically about 4 hours. May be a little less or more depending on the job.

They are looking for van drivers to shuttle guests to the various event locations. This is a great job if you like interacting with guests! There is a training for this on Wednesday, August 15th at 7 p.m. You can also be trained day of at 8 a.m., but the Wednesday training is preferred.

They are also looking for ticket sellers and greeters at various locations, and there are some other jobs as well. Here’s a list of jobs:

  • Site Greeter (Not in all locations – some locations require period costume)
  • Center Club Greeter & General Security
  • School House Greeter & General Security
  • Food Server at the Center Site (9:30-4:30) Open 10 – 3:00
  • Van Driver (interfaces with guests)
  • Center Volunteer (helps with children’s activities)
  • Downtown Ticket Booth
  • Homestead Ticket Booth
  • Center Ticket Booth

Orientation
There is a general training for all jobs except van drivers on Tuesday, August 14th at 1:00 pm, or Wednesday, August 15th at 6:00 pm at the Center Club in Historic Hillsborough Center. This orientation is run by the event organizers, but since we usually give hours credit for attending event orientations, we will for this one too. It is not required to volunteer.

There is a van driver training on Wednesday, August 15th at 7:00 pm at the Center Club. Training lasts for 1.0 hours max (might take less time). This training is not mandatory, but if you can’t make it you will be required to attend a van driver training on Saturday and Sunday morning at 8:00 am in the municipal lot across from the fire station in the downtown area.

Perks
All volunteers receive free entrance the day of their shift at all four sites. This year, on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm in the Center at Charles Denton’s house there will be a gathering of volunteers for potluck and a fun evening. Dean Malissa is invited. He portrays George Washington at Mont Vernon.

Dress code
GSA uniform: GSA shirt, name tag, khaki bottoms (pants/shorts/skirt), and comfortable shoes (be prepared to walk on many surfaces – lawn, fields, both dirt and paved roads.) Many parts of this event are outdoors, and it takes place rain or shine, so be prepared for the weather!
