Virtual Exhibit at MHT Training

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport features work from the League of NH Craftsmen in virtual augmented reality. Learn how to navigate the exhibit and assist guests with their viewing.

Scratching your head as to what you just read? It’s pretty innovative and amazing and MHT guests will be asking about it.

Please join Karina Mitchell of Aery on Friday, January 8 from 1-2pm to have a technical training of how to use Aery augmented reality to view New Hampshire art using the app Aery viewing room. To view a general demonstration of what Aery is, click here.

To prepare for the training please download Aery viewing room from the Apple app store. If you don’t have an i-phone or i-pad, you can still attend to gain an understanding of the technology.

After a few times it will become intuitive. There are many options of taking photos of the content combined with real life and I will go over that in training.

Jess Blackstone’s interest in birdlife was a source of comfort and support through exceedingly trying experiences while he was overseas during World War II. In his letters home, he wrote of hearing bird sounds at night from foxholes. On one strenuous march, he found a piece of wood from which he whittled a German land bird. Jess was encouraged by his father, Arthur Blackstone, who was also a carver. For some time, father and son worked together. However, when Jess moved to NH, he began to work independently and started to whittle the land birds he found here. The League is fortunate to have a large assemblage of these charming wooden birds in its Permanent Collection Museum.

Glen MacInnis makes clay sculptures and pottery. Most of his work begins on the potter’s wheel. He then manipulates the forms and adds sculptural elements, textures and layered glazes. Each piece is fired to 2300 degrees using various methods, including electric oxidation, wood, soda, salt, ash and raku. While his older work, such as this bowl, features traditional forms, his recent work includes lifelike sculptural elements, such as sea turtles, sea horses and other oceanic creatures. This low-rimmed clay bowl features a palette of blue, rose and cream glazes, with a sunburst design at the center. MacInnis is a regular exhibitor at League galleries, exhibitions and the Annual Craftsmen’s Fair.

NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS COMMITTEE FOR THE ARTS COLLABORATION PUTS THE CREATIVE ECONOMY TO WORK AT AIRPORT

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport features work from the League of NH Craftsmen in augmented reality.

Manchester, NH — (November 4, 2020) — Through a partnership with the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts (NHBCA), Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT), the League of NH Craftsmen (LNHC) and Aery – an augmented reality art app – MHT will feature an art exhibition, which allows visitors to engage with original fine craft by employing a virtual augmented reality experience. This art exploration will be the first of its kind to be featured in the greater New Hampshire area. Augmented reality is a digital tool that allows the fine craft on view in the display cases to be “digitally placed” at public locations around the airport, including beyond security where passengers wait for their flights to depart. With augmented reality, there are no physical constraints or restrictions of space, security, or installation logistics. The tangible objects from the League of NH Craftsmen will be safely displayed in the area of the airport where people check in for flights, wait for passengers to arrive, and retrieve their baggage.

Through the partnership, the NHBCA will demonstrate the creative economy at work by bringing together art, commerce, technology, and cultural tourism. The art-experience will begin at MHT as the holiday season approaches.  Aery will showcase 14 art pieces which feature all New Hampshire-made craft. The exhibition also includes the history and cultural significance of the LNHC which has been recognized as one of the nation’s foremost fine crafts organizations for nearly ninety years. The virtual exhibition comes at a time when socially distant art exhibitions are the new norm due to COVID-19. The beauty of this virtual art experience is that it will extend beyond the airport through the Aery app, allowing users to interact with New Hampshire art and craft in any location where there is access to Wi-Fi. Vice President of Aery AR Karina Mitchell explained, “Augmented reality is still in early days but it’s clear that overlaying the world with digital content using this emerging technology is going to grow.  It excites me to be able to collaborate in New Hampshire with forward thinking partners to introduce the magic of creative applications of AR to our local businesses and communities.”

• This collaborative project between the NHBCA, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, Aery, and the League of NH Craftsmen will merge together art, technology, and the tourism industry in the greater New England community.
• The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport sees over 2 million visitors a year and is known as the state’s busiest transportation location.
• Aery’s virtual art space will aid in promoting New Hampshire artists, AR technology and the tourism community to make fine art and craft accessible to a widespread audience.
