Prescott Farm: An Idyllic Property

By: Emily Goulet, GSA Communications Director

A group of GSAs had the opportunity to explore Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center recently.  It was the beginning of Bike Week at Weirs Beach in Laconia.  Prescott Farm is located in Laconia…but not once did we see any traffic or motorcycles!  The property overlooks a splendid view of the Lakes Region in the middle of open fields and woods.  Despite the overcast day, we were still privy to the gorgeous view.  It actually down-poured on our drive up, but once we arrived, it miraculously stopped and remained merely overcast.  A good sign!

We were greeted by Jude Hamel, Executive Director; Phoebe Vanscoy-Giessler, Development & Communications Director; and Maria Sorensen, AmeriCorp VISTA – Volunteer Coordinator/Development Assistant.  In the beautiful rustic barn, they provided a comprehensive overview of the programs while we listened.  They offer summer educational programs for students, programs for the community, activities on their trails, and more.

After their presentation, our guides gave us a tour of the property.  We walked through the gardens and through the fields, climbing a small hill where we couldn’t resist snapping a picture of the view!  We explored the playground area, where everything is comprised of as natural elements as possible.  Jude showed us the adventure pack that they provide to complement a stroll on some of their trails.  The adventure pack changes depending on the season.

The tour was also very interactive, as the staff had access to recordings of testimonials from camp participants and community members.  It helped to bring the property to life, where we could envision all of the different educational opportunities and truly sense the impact they have had on others.  Thank you to Jude, Phoebe, and Maria for showing us the property and enlightening us on all that Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center has to offer – our GSAs will be sure to recommend this property to visitors and community members!

After the tour, several GSAs visited GSA Roberta W.’s deck in Sanbornton for a lunch from the Winnisquam Deli.  We enjoyed subs, each other’s company, and a spectacular view of Lake Winnisquam – thanks to Roberta for hosting!
