Tour: Canterbury Shaker Village – Shaker Stories: History and Legacy

Description: Shaker Stories: History & Legacy explores how the Shakers journeyed from being a misunderstood and persecuted people to becoming one of the most intriguing and successful religious communities in our nation’s history. Learn how their vision of “Heaven on Earth” reflects communal life, religious practices, gender equality, pacifism, simplicity, and innovative contributions to American history and culture. Get inside access to the Meeting House (1792), Dwelling House (1793), Laundry (1816), and Schoolhouse (1823).

Eligibility: Must be an active GSA and have 50 service hours

How many GSAs can attend: 20

Uniform: GSA uniform. No purses or bags allowed on tour – leave them in your car trunk. You can bring a small cross-body purse, a waist pack, GSA cinch pack, or your new GSA neck wallet. Wear comfortable shoes.

Accessibility: Difficult/Lots of Walking &/or Lots of Stairs

# of stops: 4 Buildings, multiple stops in each building. There will be places to sit at some, but not all the stops.

Meeting Location: Carriage House (Visitor Center and Shop).

Address: 288 Shaker Rd, Canterbury

Parking: There is a large dirt lot with ample parking space.

Food/Water: There will be a light snack and drinks.

Tips: Tips are allowed, but not expected.

Weather: Not weather dependent.  Dress accordingly.
